Death of Marcel Boiteux, Honorary President of AEE

His family has just informed us of the death of President Marcel Boiteux.
The news of the passing of the Honorary President of the Association des Economistes de l'Energie (AEE) plunges our community into deep sadness.

Along with Jean-Michel Glachant and the entire AEE Board of Directors, I would like to offer his family our sincere condolences and full support at this difficult time.

In addition to his important professional responsibilities, Marcel Boiteux was and remains for the community of energy economists an undisputed reference in France and throughout the world.In 2011, the AEE created the Marcel Boiteux Prize for the best work in energy economics, which is now awarded annually.  
Ce fut également pour nous un grand honneur de soumettre au Conseil de l’IAEE réuni à Auckland en février 2020 la création du Prix International Marcel Boiteux. Grâce à son nom, cette reconnaissance internationale honore toute l’école française des économistes de l’énergie.

It was also a great honour for us to submit the creation of the Marcel Boiteux International Prize to the IAEE Council meeting in Auckland in February 2020. Thanks to his name, this international recognition honors the entire French school of energy economists. 

Throughout his rich career, President Boiteux wrote numerous scientific articles and created two key pieces of modern energy economics: marginal pricing for peaks; and second-tier pricing for natural monopolies.

He applied these new theories himself, becoming director of economic studies at EDF in 1958, then deputy managing director, managing director, and chairman from 1967 to 1987.

Even today, his theories form the basis of airline ticket pricing, Uber, and all thinking on energy.

We feel a great void today.
An innovative spirit committed to public service, an enlightened industrialist, a recognized but discreet and thoughtful personality, we already deeply miss Président Boiteux.
We will continue along the path he has blazed.
